How Prop Firms Work
What Is Prop Trading?
A A prop firm gives you money to trade with. You pay a fee, pass a challenge, and the firm hands you a funded account.
Your own money never touches the market. You’re not depositing capital and you’re not on payroll either. Think of it as getting paid for a skill, not for how much cash you started with.
The challenge itself runs on a demo account, so the price moves are real but your trades don’t hit the live market until you’re funded.
How Do Prop Firms Make Money?
Prop firms make most of their revenue from challenge fees, and they use that money to fund the traders who pass. The firms that stay in business put that income back into better payouts, better platforms, and support that actually helps.
A firm that pays on time and keeps its rules fair builds trust and keeps growing. One that stalls payouts or shifts the rules after the fact doesn’t last. Every firm on this page has already cleared that bar.
Challenge Types: 1-Step, 2-Step, and Instant Funding
Most prop firms offer one of three ways to get funded.
- 1-Step Challenge: hit one profit target while staying inside the rules, and you move straight to a funded account.
- 2-Step Challenge: hit a profit target twice while staying inside the rules before you get funded.
- Instant Funding: no challenge at all. You pay a higher fee upfront and start on a funded account right away.
What Is Drawdown?
Drawdown is the most your account can lose before the challenge closes automatically. It’s one of the first things to check before you pick a firm, since most challenges apply two limits at once.
- Daily Loss Limit: the most you can lose in a single day. It’s set from your balance at the start of that day. With a 5% daily limit on a $100,000 account, that’s $5,000. It doesn’t rise if you’re up for the day, and it resets the next morning.
- Max Loss Limit: your overall limit for the whole challenge. It’s tied to your highest balance, so it rises as you win, then stops moving once it reaches your starting balance. On a $100,000 account with a 10% limit, you start with a $90,000 limit. Grow the account to $105,000 and the limit rises to $95,000. Reach $110,000 and it stops at $100,000, so every dollar above that is yours to trade with no risk of losing the account.
Firms also set the Max Loss Limit one of two ways, and the difference matters more than most traders expect.
- End-of-day: your limit only moves based on your balance at the close of each trading day. What happens while a trade is still open doesn’t count, only where you land by the end of the day.
- Intraday: your limit moves in real time, including trades you haven’t closed yet. Gain value during the day and give it back before closing out, and that swing can count against your limit even if you end the day flat.
Profit Splits Explained
Once you’re funded, the profit split decides how a winning trade gets divided between you and the firm.
Say you’re on an 80/20 split and you clear $10,000 in profit for the month. You walk away with $8,000, the firm keeps $2,000 for the capital and risk.
Push for a higher split and the math moves fast. Bump that same $10,000 up to a 100% split and the full amount lands in your account, nothing held back.
How Payouts Work
Getting paid on a funded account comes down to a few steps, and most firms follow the same basic flow.
- Verify your identity. A one-time check most firms run before releasing your first payout.
- Pick a payout method. Bank transfer, card, or crypto are the usual options.
- Know your payout schedule. Some firms pay weekly, some biweekly, others let you request one whenever you’re ready.
- Get your money fast. Many firms process it within 24 to 48 hours of your request.
Tips for Passing Your Challenge
Getting funded is less about luck and more about how you handle risk.
- Size down. Most failed challenges come from overtrading a position, not from a bad call on direction.
- Pick an account size that matches your experience. Starting smaller on your first challenge is a smart way in, not a limitation.
- Trade the challenge like it’s already real money. The traders who pass treat it that way from day one.
How Top10Prop Ranks the Firms
We looked at over 100 prop firms before narrowing this list down. Each firm is scored on what actually matters once you’re trading with their money.
- Payouts. How fast and how reliably a firm pays out.
- Rules. We favor firms with clear, fair conditions over strict or hidden limits.
- Cost. Challenge fees weighed against account size, to find real value.
- Profit split. Firms that give traders a bigger share rank higher.
- User reviews. Real trader feedback checked against our own scoring, so the rankings hold up.
Only the firms that clear Top10Prop’s bar make the list above.
Top Prop Trading Firms FAQs
Are prop firms actually legit?
Yes. Every firm on this page is a real, established business with a track record of paying traders and an active community behind it. We check payout history and rules before any firm earns a spot on this list. If it's here, it already passed that check.
What if I don't pass the challenge?
Your account closes once you hit the loss limit. That's the only cost, you don't lose anything beyond your entry fee. You can start a new challenge right away, and many firms offer a discount on your next attempt.
Is there a deadline to pass the challenge?
Most firms don't set one. You trade at your own pace, no countdown, no pressure. Take the time you need and hit your target when the setups are right.
Will I get my entry fee back after I'm funded?
Yes, on most firms. Once you're funded and take your first payout, your entry fee gets refunded. Getting funded ends up costing you nothing.
Do I need experience to start?
No formal experience required. What matters is hitting the profit target while staying inside the rules. If you can handle a demo account well, you're ready for a challenge.
Can I trade with my own strategy?
Yes, most firms let you trade however you already do, day trading, swing trading, scalping. A few restrict things like news trading or bots, so it's worth checking before you start.
Do I owe taxes on my payouts?
In most cases, yes. You're trading as an independent contractor, not an employee, so payouts count as income. Tax rules vary by country, so check what applies where you live.
Can I run more than one funded account?
Yes. Most firms let you hold several funded accounts at once, and many traders do this to grow their overall earning potential. Some firms even let you manage or copy trades across accounts.
